An exquisite quilt, based on Rudyard Kipling’s own illustrations of his Just So Stories, will be raffled at our church’s annual Christmas Bazaar, Saturday, Dec. 3. Tickets are $5 each, or five for $20. Tickets are available at the church up until the drawing. Proceeds go to benefit the church.

All 12 stories from the book, which he started writing for his daughter while living in Dummerston, Vermont, are represented. They include “How the Leopard Got His Spots,” “The Elephant’s Child,” “How the Alphabet Was Made,” and “The Beginning of the Armadillos.”

The tapestry was created by six women in 1994 for a raffle at All Souls Church in Brattleboro, Vermont. Carol Barber, Marianne Buttner, Maisie Crowther, Christina Gibbons, Sarah Page, and Ede Thomas each created two fabric-and-yarn designs, which they incorporated into the quilt. Priscilla Sherwood won the raffle, and in 2009 she donated the quilt to the Windham County Reads organization. It was again raffled, and won by Nancy Miller. This year Miller donated the tapestry to Guilford Community Church, where the raffle will be held.

The Kipling quilt was entered in the 1995 Vermont Quilt Festival held in Northfield, Vermont, where it came within one point of receiving third place. Although designed as a wall hanging, this quilt would fit nicely on a twin bed.

Tickets will be at the bazaar, 9-1:30 December 3. Online ticket sales are closed.
